About Dakshineswar Kali Temple
Located on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, the Dakshineswar Kali Temple is a revered Hindu pilgrimage site dedicated to Bhavatarini, an aspect of the goddess Kali. Built in 1855 by the philanthropist Rani Rashmoni, the temple is famous for its association with the 19th-century mystic, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, who served as its priest and attained spiritual enlightenment here.
The sprawling complex, built in the traditional Nava-ratna or nine-spired style of Bengal architecture, includes the main Kali temple, a riverside bathing ghat, and a row of twelve identical temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Its peaceful and spiritually charged atmosphere attracts thousands of devotees daily.
