About Vasant Utsav
An Elegant Welcome to Spring
Vasant Utsav in Shantiniketan is a unique and elegant version of the festival of Holi. Started by Rabindranath Tagore, it moves away from the boisterousness often associated with Holi and transforms it into a dignified yet joyous cultural event.
Students of Visva-Bharati University, dressed in yellow, welcome spring with processions, singing and dancing to Tagore's seasonal songs. The celebration involves the gentle smearing of 'abir' (dry colored powder) as a mark of affection. It's a beautiful spectacle of color, music, and culture.
