About Kali Puja
Honoring the Fierce Protector Goddess
Kali Puja is one of Bengal's most significant festivals, celebrated on the new moon day of the Hindu month of Kartik. While the rest of India celebrates Diwali by worshipping Goddess Lakshmi, Bengalis honor the divine feminine in her fierce form as Kali, the destroyer of evil and protector of the innocent.
The festival transforms the night into a dazzling spectacle of light. Streets and homes are adorned with oil lamps (diyas), candles, and colorful electric lights. The highlight for many is the breathtaking fireworks that light up the night sky, symbolizing the dispelling of darkness and evil.
Similar to Durga Puja, neighborhoods set up elaborate pandals with artistic idols of Goddess Kali. The worship is performed late at night, often with Tantric rituals, and is followed by the distribution of 'bhog' (sacred food), creating a powerful atmosphere of devotion and community.
