About Ganga Sagar Mela
Where Faith Meets the Ocean
The Ganga Sagar Mela is an annual pilgrimage fair held at Sagar Island, where the sacred River Ganga flows into the Bay of Bengal. It is the second-largest human congregation in the world after the Kumbh Mela. Devotees believe that a holy dip in these waters, especially on Makar Sankranti day, washes away one's sins.
The journey itself is a pilgrimage, involving travel by road, ferry, and finally on foot. The island comes alive with the chants of pilgrims, the presence of Naga sadhus, and makeshift stalls, creating an atmosphere of intense faith and devotion.
